Gideon Hawke #7: A World Turned Upside Down

With the French entry into the war the British commanders knew they lacked the power to force the issue in the Middle or New England States. The Americans and French knew an assault on the British stronghold of Manhattan would be so costly it could lose them the war. With few options, the British gaze turned south.

The British had already tried and failed to seize Charleston, South Carolina, but with more experience, more troops, and a new plan, an expedition set out to seize Charleston and rally the southern states to the King’s cause.

Washington had to maintain his cordon around the British in Manhattan, but dispatched a brigade of some of his toughest Continental troops to reinforce the militia defending Charleston.

Gideon and Ruth set out for a new campaign that will test the limits of their endurance. It will bring them to battlefields such as Camden, Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse, and ultimately a small port named Yorktown.
